This April Fool’s Day, let the joke not be you and your career.

Surprise! It’s April 1st. You know what that means...

Jokes aside, as your career coach I must ask -

Are you fooling around with your career?

By this I mean, are you taking it seriously?

Often one can find themselves floating through life. You wake, you work, you sleep, You wake, you work, you sleep and so it continues until one day you awake and realise you have 0 hold on your career.

Or perhaps you’re active but lack focus on the next steps of your career -  Are you networking with the right people? Are you visible to the right people?

Or perhaps you’re just waiting on the weekend, so your real plans can begin, right?

Whatever the reason may be, each and everyone of us fools around with our career at some point. And in reality, it’s usually you who becomes the joke in the end. Putting it bluntly, your career takes up most of your life. No matter what job it is, how many breaks you take, it still takes up most of your time and energy. So let me ask you -

  1. Are you enjoying your job? Do you feel positive towards your job on Monday morning?
  2. Do you have your next 5 moves planned out? Are you seriously heading for a promotion or are you hoping to be noticed and that your ‘hard work’ will be recognised?
  3. Are you floating through life ready to hit your burnout? Because that’ll happen eventually when you have a lack of control and vision.

How do you stop fooling around with your career I hear you ask?

Start by getting intentional. Set clear, actionable goals... speaking of goals Quarter 2 starts today, a great day to revisit your vision board that you made at the start of the year.

If you don’t have a vision board yet, start today!

There is no time like the present to get clear on your BHAG (Big Hairy Ambitious Goal) and start putting your next 5 moves in place.

The first step towards any progress.. is to make that step towards it!

Take Action!

What are the small steps you can take towards your goal? Make it a habit. When it becomes a habit it becomes routine. Set aside 2 hours a week, or 15 minutes a day to truly focus on that step. For perspective if you set aside 2 hours a week from January 1st, you would’ve been at least 26 hours ahead, which means a lot closer to your goal, rather than waiting for the goal to be magically achieved.

Imagine 26 hours of focused time and energy. Small habits = Big results.

“I don’t have time”

Let’s be clear. Everyone has time. What you chose to do with that time, that’s up to you. Spending 1 hour scrolling watching social media could’ve been 1 hour carving out your strategy on how to be more visible at work, on the path to your promotion. 1 hour extra binge watching TV, could’ve been 1 hour on working out, improving your mental balance and wellbeing. Too often we let time slip past, out of comfort or boredom -  take this as a reminder to be in control of your time.

Doing something is hard but also not doing something is hard. Choose your hard.

Let this newsletter be the career kick you need to take action. 3 months have passed now in 2025. Before you know it, it’ll be summer. How are things shaping up for you?

So what’s it going to be? Are you going to keep waiting for opportunities to magically appear, or are you going to take charge? If you don’t make a move, someone else will - someone hungrier, more prepared, and willing to do what you won’t.

No more excuses. No more waiting. If you’re not where you want to be, figure out why. Is it lack of effort? Lack of strategy? Fear of failure? The good news is, you have the power to change it. But only if you stop playing around and start acting like the CEO of your own career.
