The weather is getting warmer, nights are getting longer, and your career may not be the first idea of fun this Summer. (unless it is, then kudos to you)
Typically, for most people, the idea of progressing your career tends to slow down within these next few upcoming months. We tend to take more vacations, stay outdoors for longer and pretty much divert our attention to more play rather work... and theres nothing wrong with that. Truly. You deserve a great Summer, you work hard and should be able to enjoy it.
But what if I told you there is a way to enjoy both work and play, in a way in which your career continues to progress? Even if you do want to focus more on the life enjoyment side?
"Work smarter, not harder”
It’s Summer! You’re allowed to take your foot off the gas a little, but don’t completely brake.
Let’s master working smarter not harder. By this I mean, let’s be strategic.
It’s not only you who enjoys the sunshine after working hours, but most likely your colleagues too. I’m sure you are already planning the team’s drinks or casual dinners after work. But why not use this as a networking opportunity?
How often do you actually connect with your colleagues, human to human? I’m not saying you need to be their best friend, but many times we always view co-workers through the working lens. You’ll be surprised to learn there’s much more to it. Which means there’s a much higher chance to actually connect over life stuff. When you connect over life stuff, your working relationship gets deeper, which can help nourish your connection in the working environment. Not only is this great for team bonding, but it also serves as ‘watering your network’ which can lead to them helping you when needed in the future, simply because you’re putting in the time and effort to set a strong foundation.
Of course, do maintain a level of professionalism, but do also allow yourself to get to know who you’re working with. You never know, in the future this could help towards a promotion you seek by nurturing these important relationships, as more will vouch for your credibility.
Remember, networking doesn’t always mean showing up to an event and introducing yourself over and over again. It could be of more value to water what’s right in front of you. This way you can have fun by going out, which is still classed as work in this case!
Recharge & Reset
Use this time to have fun. Recharge and reset your energy:
It’s hugely important that you replenish your energy, which can often be overlooked.
Sometimes we can get so caught up in work that we forget to live too. The last thing you want to do is burn out, and then you’ll be of no use to anyone. Crashing out can have detrimental affects on your career. It will also affect your sleep, your mood and you’ll be running on a low battery until your health really takes a toll.
So take this time to have fun.
Raise your vibration! Do the things you enjoy! Have fun!
Your mind, body and soul will thank you for it.
In the end, it’s you who drives your career - ensure you are prepared to do so by looking after yourself.
Mind over matter
Whilst you’re working smarter and having fun, keep your purpose in mind.
Why are you in this career? What’s your next goal?
Don’t lose sight of why you started. Keep your mind over matter. You are in control.
You’re the author of your book, the caption of your ship.
Decide what you want, remind yourself of your intentions.
With the purpose top of mind, the universe will help guide you to attaining your goals.
Simply by making the decision you’re already one step closer, without having to exhaust yourself in the process, yet you’re still making great progress!
Bonus - Why not take yourself out for a coffee and spend some time thinking about your BHAG (Big Hairy Ambitious Goal) and what your next 5 moves are. Taking the time to do this will allow your goals to manifest quicker, as your vision gets clearer. With a relaxed approach to do your groundwork, you’re already starting the adventure to reaching your goal. Be sure to keep your vision board at hand, and if you don’t have one, I strongly suggest you create one!
These 3 steps above will help prepare you to continue progressing your career this Summer. They will also become your competitive advantage if completed wisely...
